Kim Roberts

Kim in 1996.....Kim in 1963

R.I.P. June 25th 2000

With the passing of Kim Roberts on June 25 this year, the RGM world, still reeling from the recent deaths of Screaming Lord Sutch, Heinz Burt and Geoff Goddard, received yet another blow.

Introduced to Joe Meek by Screaming Lord Sutch, Kim made a number of recordings at 304 Holloway Road. Although only one - "I'll Prove It" b/w "For Loving Me This Way" - was released, recordings exist of some of her unissued RGM material which show that she was gifted with a much greater ability than her one 45 might indicate. Her reputed album with the Blue Rondos, supposedly recorded but never issued, has yet to surface. "For Loving Me This Way" was also featured in the 1963 film, "Live It Up", in which Kim appeared in an impossibly tight leotard and looked as if she was being held up with invisible scaffolding.

In recent years Kim was a staunch supporter of the RGM "revival" and could often be found among the crowd at fan gatherings and gigs. She also performed at a number of these gigs and proved herself to be a fine R&B vocalist. She had also been working on and off on a musical project with Roger LaVern though whether any finished recordings from this exist remains to be seen.

Kim was also a very genuine and pleasant person who always had time for everyone, and her appearance always brightened up the dingier pubs. By being so involved in the RGM fan scene, she probably did a lot for many newcomers being able to get some kind of personal connection with the world of 304 and made it not such a distant and mythological place...

The cause of Kim's death is currently not confirmed, although she had suffered from ill-health for several years. Her funeral was held on July 3rd.
